Body Found in Wendell Rock Quarry

Residents in Wendell, a town of about 3,600, are troubled by the discovery Sunday of a body in in a local rock quarry.

Wendell Police Chief told WRAL-TV5'sKelly Wrightthat the death is being investigated as a homicide. The hands on the body were bound behind the back, he said.

The body was found about 5:45 p.m. by a Wendell officer on routine patrol at the quarry. The body badly decomposed.

Privette says the body found yesterday was that of a white male with brown, about 200 pounds, 5-foot-10, in his 20s or 30s. The cause of death was a blow to the head.

Privette says the body floated to the surface of the quarry after a rope or some other anchoring device broke.

The body was sent to the state Medical Examiner's Office in Chapel Hill for an autopsy.

The last slaying in Wendell was in 1981, when a man was clubbed to death with a tire tool.
