Sleet, Freezing Rain Possible

Be prepared for some slippery driving and, perhaps, school delays Thursday morning, especially in areas north and west of the Triangle.

An approaching weather system could bring sleet and freezing rain to a large portion of the WRAL-TV5 viewing area, including areas as far south and east as Fayetteville and Goldsboro. The precipitation likely will start late Wednesday night or early Thursday, possibly as sleet, and end as freezing rain by noon Thursday.

A similar system three weeks ago left a coating of ice on trees and power lines, but it did not stick to roads. TV5 Meteorologist Mike Maze says the result could be the same with this week's storm. The roads may be warm enough that whatever falls will melt or not freeze on contact, he said.

The high temperature Thursday should reach 35 degrees, and the low early Friday will be at or just above freezing.
