Raleigh police are searching for a bank robber who told a teller he had a bomb. His threat led to the evacuation of the NationsBank building on Raleigh's downtown Fayetteville Street Mall.

At least one square block was cordoned off by investigators after employees and customers were told to leave by stairways. Police told employees of the building that there had been a bomb threat, not that a robbery was in progress.

The evacuation was ordered at about 11 a.m. Tuesday. By 12:30 p.m. those who work in other businesses in the building had been allowed to go back in, but NationsBank workers were still prevented from entering. Investigators were still inside the bank at that time.

Police now say there was no bomb, and it is still not clear whether the suspect got away with any money.

Police say surveillance video and clues found in an abandoned bag will help their investigation.
