Police have identified a body found Sunday in Durham as that of a 42-year-old local man, and an autopsy shows that he suffered a gunshot wound.

The man was identified as Larry Darnell Jones, who had lived in Durham, moved away and recently returned. He was identified through dental records.

Jones' body was found Sunday in a sewage drainage ditch along Umstead Street. Police also found a small-caliber gun.

Extensive deterioration of the body indicates death might have occurred four to eight weeks ago. His body could have been swept into the city sewer system from as far away as Interstate 40 or Angier Avenue.

Police have interviewed nearby residents, but none reported seeing or hearing anything amiss. No one knows how long the body might have been in the culvert.
