Female Students Take Back the Night

For the first time, police in the Carolinas have made arrests on a college campus in connection with the "date rape" drug. Four students at Clemson University, including one from Chapel Hill, were charged with possessing the drug rohypnol, or "roofies", on the street.

School housing departments and health departments are trying to educate students about the drug and about date rape in general, but students have taken on much of the responsibility themselves.

For example, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, student activism was alive and well Thursday.

What looked like a scene from the 1960's was more than just a day of music that brought students together. It was National Young Women's Day of Action, when coeds meet to talk about issues important to them, and to empower each other.

This time around rohypnol which, when slipped into a drink makes a woman incapable of fighting off a rapist, has been a hot topic.

University of North Carolina Substance Abuse Program Coordinator Matt Sullivan says the drug has been used on the UNC campus.

Fliers around campus have made students aware of the threat, but students are taking the warnings one step further. They plan a "Take Back the Night" rally to bring even more attention to rape on campus.

Student C.J. Perry says the drug poses a real threat to every female on campus.

Women aren't the only ones promoting a safer campus. there have been some high-profile cases involving substance abuse at UNC, a factor that often plays a role in rape cases. Members of the school's soccer team are trying to get others to sign a petition agreeing to be alcohol and drug-free for 24 hours.

Student Alex Grospiron says it's a small thing that can teach a big lesson.

The UNC "Take Back the Night" march will take place Thursday night at 7 in the "pit".
