Kissinger Endorses Helms
Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger came to Greensboro Saturday to endorse the U.S. Senate campaign of his former enemy, Jesse Helms. Acknowledging that they still don't see eye-to-eye on some issues, Kissinger said he was speaking on Helms' behalf because "we need a Republican senator. We need a Republican chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee." Helms is now chairman of that committee.
On Saturday, Kissinger called Clinton's foreign policy a "Band-Aid" and criticized the administration for paying too much attention to domestic issues at the expense of foreign affairs.
The men spoke at a fundraising luncheon.
Helms called his opponent, former Charlotte mayor Harvey Gantt, "a pathetic figure." Continuing to decline the Gantt campaign's proposals for a debate, Helms attributed his refusal to unwillingness to "help (Gantt) raise a crowd."
In 1975, Helms called for Kissinger's resignation, calling him a man of "proven failure."
