Two Weeks Later Triangle Still Feeling Fran's Effects

Hurricane Fran is long gone, but many in the Triangle area are still feeling the effects and dealing with the aftermath. One major issue is the problem of sewage spills.

State officials, in assessing the damage, have found that the storm created overflows at treatment plants in 88 cities and towns. Officials also determined that more than 266 million gallons of untreated waste went into rivers and creeks.

Now, officials are considering making changes at waste treatment facilities.

Problems with water treatment plants has led to additional problems with already troubled waters in the state. The Neuse River has become even more badly polluted since the storm, and it wasn't in great shape before.

Doug Rader of the Environmental Defense Fund says the damage is widespread and costly.

The EDF and other environmental agencies are studying the storm's effects and trying to find solutions.
