State lawmakers are considering several changes to tighten North Carolina's DWI laws.
One proposed change before a Senate committee would create a single checkpoint for DWI and driver's license screening.
Another would classify anyone with three DWI convictions in 10 years as a habitual offender. Currently, that happens if there are three convictions within a seven-year period.
The changes could also create three new felonies involving deaths or injuries caused by a drunken driver.
