Local high-school students hear their fair share of abusive language, according to a
report
released Wednesday by a statewide partnership that aims to eliminate harassment and discrimination based on perceived sexual orientation in schools.

surveyed students at six high schools in Durham, Wake and Orange counties to assess the degree to which verbal harassment and homophobic language were present.
Nearly 70 percent of students reported hearing homophobic remarks in school with the most common places for such language in hallways and cafeterias.
Non-harassment policies did appear to make a difference.
