Plan To Stop Off-Hours Driving Of Henderson Police Cars Nixed

The idea was to save fuel, but the Henderson City Council decided to keep police officers in the driver's seat at the end of the day.

The council voted 5-4 to allow officers to continue to drive squad cars home, with Mayor Clem Seifert casting the deciding vote.

City Manager Jerry Moss wanted to end the practice to save on gasoline costs. The policy would have taken effect next month. But speakers on behalf of officers said the idea was a perk used in recruiting. Police Chief Glen Allen said 22 officers, or about a third of the force, live outside the city.
