Michael Rakouskas of Durham was putting up signs in his neighborhood Saturday morning to advertise a yard sale on Mineral Springs Road when a driver lost control of his Chevy Tahoe while coming around a corner and came straight at him.

The truck was driven by 27-year-old Kevin Antwan Williams. According to the Highway Patrol, Williams lost control of the truck, ran off the right side, then came back on the road and ran off the left side, striking Rakouskas as he climbed a split-rail fence, trying to run out of the way.

State Troopers believe Williams was speeding when he lost control.

The 31-year-old Rakouskas was treated and released from Duke Medical Center. Williams was uninjured.

Troopers say the accident would have been a lot worse if Rakouskas had not reacted quickly and tried to get over the fence. They also say charges are pending against Williams.
