Prison guards at the Southern Correctional Institute near Troy in Montgomery County shot and killed inmate Jody Osborne as he was trying to escape on Friday night.
The 22-year-old inmate had scaled a fence at the prison when he was shot twice about 8:25 p.m.
Osborne made it about 100 yards outside the prison fence before being captured. He died about 30 minutes later at a local hospital.
Osborne was serving a sentence of 27-plus years for conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder, among other charges. He had been convicted in Guilford County last December.
