Raleigh Homeowners Unite To Prevent Traffic Sprawl

Sprawling growth is changing lives and changing peace of mind all over the Triangle. A group of homeowners has come together to try to ease the pain of progress in their neighborhood.

With traffic coming off I-540, more lanes on Capital Boulevard and a mall connector road in the mix, residents say turning off Jacqueline Lane will be difficult and dangerous.

"I think a light and a cut-through would be the safest thing to do in my opinion," says homeowner Rick Cary. "Remove Gresham Lake Road where it's at, move it up, coming through the other little outlet mall and have it directly connect to Jacqueline right across the street."

DOT engineers say there are no plans for a light, and it would be counterproductive to traffic flow on Capital Boulevard.

Homeowners know they cannot stop all that growth, but they do not want it to come at the expense of their safety and their sanity.

"I can understand the fact that one road might have to suffer for the greater benefit of everybody, but if it gets dangerous out there, that's a whole different story. That's when we'll take serious action," says Peter Gramiak, president of the homeowners association.

The neighbors plan to start attending Raleigh City Council meetings to make sure their voices are heard as the growth continues.
