Organizers Want To Bring The 'Glory Days' Back To Fayetteville
Fayetteville wants to become home to an annual, premier Memorial Day event in North Carolina.
The day will start with a ceremony at theAirborne and Special Operations Museumwith General Hugh Shelton. A new Vietnam Veteran Memorial will be dedicated for a new park across the street.
"I think it's going to mean a lot coming from our community and showing them we care," says organizer Carolyn Culbreth.
Former soldiers will lead a procession to the downtown market house. Old cars will line Hay Street like they did in 1942. The Fayetteville Arts Council will be transformed into a USO canteen.
Hundreds of veterans will wear their uniforms while others will be dressed in World War II costumes, swing-dancing in the streets.
"They deserve the recognition. We have sort of gotten away from it. I think U.S. patriotism is low, and it needs to be brought back up where it should be," says resident Tom Stanley.
Glory Days will be held Saturday, May 26. The event falls on Military Appreciation Day as well as the last day of All-American Week. Because there will be so many people in town, they hope to attract more than 2,000 people locally and even more from across the state.
