Driver Crashes Car Into Tree After Being Shot In Durham

Durham police arrested a teenager in connection with a shooting that ended with the victim crashing his car into a tree.

At about 4 p.m., authorities said, a man, 28, whose identity was not released, crashed his car into a tree at the corner of Holloway and Raynor streets after he was shot a few blocks away at the intersection of Holloway Street and Briggs Avenue.

A short time after the shooting, officers arrested Maurice Adams, 19, of Park Avenue and charged him with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. Adams and the shooting victim know each other, according to investigators.

Police said the shooting victim was driving on Briggs Avenue shortly before 4 p.m. when Adams allegedly drove up to him. The two men exchanged words, investigators said, and shots were fired as they turned onto Holloway Street.

Detectives, however, are still investigating what actually happened.

A search of the victim's car turned up a .38 caliber handgun, authorities said, but they did not immediately know whether it was used in the shooting.

The victim was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment. He was undergoing surgery Tuesday night and was listed in serious condition.

Authorities have not yet made any arrests, but believe the victim and the shooter knew each other.

Investigators said the shooting does not appear to be gang-related.
