Durham Girl Finds Way To Raise Money For Library

When a money crunch forced the Durham library to freeze the budget, a 10-year-old girl came up with a creative and appropriate solution.

Brit Strickler raised more than $1,000 during a book sale this weekend.

"People have donated books, and some of my friends donated books. Yesterday, when I was looking in the dining room at 800 books, I was [happy]," she says. "I had the idea of raising money for it. Then I thought since it's a library, if I'm going to have a yard sale it might as well be books."

"I'm really proud that as a kid, she's always wanted to help other people," says Brit's mother, Clare Reese-Glore. "She's always had that in mind."

Strickler got some local bookstores to help out. The Regulator donated a leather-bound edition from the Harry Potter series. Strickler says she is a great lover of books, and she thinks everyone should have access to them.

"It gives you ideas and things to think about and good stories, and it shows you people have imagination."

In her imagination, Strickler dreamed she could do something about the library budget problems.

"Dad says if we sell every single book here at about 25 cents, we could get $400."

All proceeds will go to the Durham Public Library.
