The lines at return counters will start forming early Friday as many people take their gifts back. If you are one of them, we have a few suggestions.

  • Check for a gift receipt before heading to the store. Many people tuck them in with their presents.
  • Many stores will post or publish their return policies, so you may want to look before heading up to the exchange counter. That way there are no surprises.
  • You will likely have seven to 10 days to make a return, so do not procrastinate, even if you hate crowds.
  • Remember, retailers are not required by law to give you a refund or even exchange an item.So being patient and polite could get you a long way.For those going to the mall to shop, many retailers promise there will be a lot out of good deals out there after a slower than expected holiday shopping season.
