What started out as a craft project to build awareness for AIDS in 1987 has now blanketed the country, including our State Capitol.

More than 70 panels of the AIDS Memorial Quilt are on display at the Capitol over the next week. It is a small sampling of the 42,000 panels that have been created over the past 13 years. Several support groups and people from the area who died of AIDS are represented in the panels.

"It is an emotional experience, because you do recognize that each person here is a person who lived and is loved and has died," says Joan Purcell of Faith Ministries AIDS Services.

More panels are on display at UNC-Chapel Hill. The quilt is visiting the Triangle as part of World AIDS Day.
