Cumberland Deputies Demolish Mobile Homes, Hope to Wipe Out Crime

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office hopes to wipe out one of its crime problems by demolishing a haven for drug dealers.

A few families were living in the Oakwood Mobile Home Park without power and water. However, most trailers were vacant and popular with drug dealers.

Community police officers and county inspectors tried to get the owner to bring the park up to code, but he refused. The park is being demolished.

Sgt. Glenn Mobley, the community policing supervisor for the sheriff's office, says the demolition is a big step for the area.

"It's not only symbolic to people who live here that have been plagued with problems with the criminal element, but the landlords who lease. [It puts] them on notice that this is going to happen," he says.

The sheriff's office has found new homes for the families that were living in the substandard housing.
