Wake County Voters Say Yes to School Bond Referendum

Voters in Wake County passed the $250 million bond referendum by almost four to one Tuesday. Voter turnout, however, was very low, with only 14 percent of eligible voters casting ballots.

The final tally was 33,745 for and 8,854 against.

After years of watching area population surge and schools struggle to keep up, they saw the need and now 12 new schools will be purchased. In addition, 35 existing schools will be renovated and every school in Wake County will get a computer network.

Superintendent Dr. Jim Surratt says voters will see results immediately.

Portable classrooms are probably going to remain in place, but Wake County will probably not have to buy more.
