Railroad crossings can be dangerous places, but they are getting safer in the Tarheel State.

A new study concludes that collisions, fatalities and injuries at crossings statewide dropped by 16 percent last year.

North Carolina was among the top ten states in railroad crossing collisions for 1994. Preliminary numbers from this report drop the state to 12th on that list.

The U.S. Transportation Department says vehicle-train collisions are 30 times more likely to be fatal those involving two street vehicles
