Students at Greenwood Middle School in Goldsboro are asking for donations to help the family of their fellow student Randy Adderton. Adderton, 13, was killed along with his 4-year-old sister Brittany whom he was attempting to rescue from a back bedroom.

Randy Adderton had already taken his wheelchair-bound grandmother safely out of their burning house and returned to help his sister while their mother attempted to douse the fire. Bars on a bedroom window apparently prevented him from escaping with Brittany. The bars were put on the house years ago to prevent robberies, authorities said.

The grandmother, Joyce Adderton, was treated at Wayne County Hospital and released.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Department has asked SBI investigators to help determine the cause of the fire.

Donations to help the Adderton family can be sent to Sandra McCullen Greenwood Middle School 3209 East Ashe Street Goldsboro, NC 2753
