Senior David Carbonell, captain of the Enloe High School cross-country team, is a person who is admired by everyone for several reasons.

"He does everything for the team. I couldn't ask for a better student-athlete," says Enloe cross-country coach Joe Johnson.

Andrew Roe, Carbonell's teammate, says he always puts a lot of heart in everything he does.

"We all have a lot of respect for him, and I think he has a lot of respect for us too," he says. "He has always been a great guy. He has looked out for everybody."

Carbonell runs 70 miles a week during the summer to get ready for cross-country running. Academically, he ranks sixth in the senior class.

"I love going to school and going to class. Every day I go into class, I just try to think of it as a new experience," he says. "I see it as an opportunity to go out and to do better."

His teacher, Elizabeth Woolard, says Carbonell sincerely cares about people.

"He tries very hard to help people who are reaching out to his excellence in scholarship," she says.

Carbonell says his achievements have to do with his internal drive.

"For me, internal drive is that I don't ever say that I couldn't get something done," he says. "I always want to feel that I have the ability and opportunity to do something, and with that opportunity, I should do something about it and see how far I can go."

David Carbonell is this week's winner of the Extra Effort Award. Tom Suiter's Extra Effort award airs Wednesdays during WRAL's 6:00 News.
