Golfers Hope To 'Putt-Putt' Their Way To National Championship

Putt-Putt may be a fun game for kids, but it will be played for big bucks in Fayetteville this week.

TheProfessional Putters Associationis holding its National Championship in Fayetteville. Golfers from around the world are competing for $100,000 in prize money. The best score from eight rounds walks away a champion.

Don Clayton built the first Putt-Putt course in Fayetteville in 1954. Bobby Owens, president of the Professional Putters Association, says Clayton's concept for the game was simple.

"Putting was half the game. If you go out and play, you are allowed two shots on every green," Owens says. "That's where the name Putt-Putt came from."

Today, Putt-Putt is the largest miniature golf franchise in the world. Putt-Putt courses cover over 28 states and eight countries. There are more than 260 locations worldwide.

Later in the week, ESPN will visit Fayetteville to tape the putt-putters for a future show.
