Western Harnett High School is moving up the chain of state athletics, but there is a price to pay.

They are moving up from 3-A competition to 4-A, but they will be playing teams in the eastern part of the state such as Scotland and Robeson counties. It means athletes will be making three-hour round trips regularly.

Administrators say it would make more geographical sense to be aligned with nearby 4-A teams in Wake and Lee Counties.

"I think it will pose a conflict," says Christina Jackson, a student athlete. "By us getting home so late, we won't get to study as much as we would, and I don't think athletes would get to do their best."

The school is appealing the reclassification. A decision is expected to be made in March.
