Investigation Continues into Attempted Bombings at Cumberland County Clinics

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is releasing new information on a year-old case involving attempted bombings at two Cumberland County abortion clinics.

So far, there are no suspects or arrests, but federal officials hope that will soon change.

For the first time, ATF agents are confirming that the dynamite used in both attacks wasstolen from Robeson County.

"We continue to ask if anyone has any information they could share with us. The reward is still there," says Cumberland County Sheriff Moose Butler.

It wasOctober 3 of last yearwhen a bundle of dynamite equipped with a timer was found in the back of the Hallmark Abortion Clinic.

Minutes later, a few miles away, a similar device was found at the front door of another abortion office, the Carolina Women's Clinic.

No one was hurt, and the devices were disarmed.

ATF agents now say the dynamite in both cases was stolen from the owners of the St. Pauls Farmer's Exchange in Robeson County.

"We feel it's either Cumberland or Robeson where these individuals were from," says Butler.

Sheriff's investigators believe at least two people were involved in the attacks.

"The dynamite was handled in similar ways to make us believe it was more than one, but they were connected," says Butler.

"We continue to receive some tips. They are sporadic, and of course, they slowed down since the original crime," says Capt. Brad Chandler of the Fayetteville Police Department.

Fayetteville police investigated the Hallmark Clinic attack. They hope the persistent questioning of inmates leads to an arrest.

"Criminals, they like to sing, they like to talk. We're constantly aware of that and anyone who is remotely connected to any type of adverse groups that we come in contact with who have committed offenses, we always make sure we bring it up," says Chandler.

Both city and county investigators believe there is someone out there who knows who did this, and they are hoping for that one phone call.
