State Medical Examiner: Autopsy on Baby in Fatal Fire Incorrect
The state medical examiner says the autopsy results on a baby who was found inside a burned-out apartment were incorrect.
A baby found inside a burned-out apartment did not die from alcohol poisoning as previously reported.
State Chief Medical Examiner Dr. John Butts said that samples that tested positive for high alcohol levels were from another person and not Dayna Elamrani Carranza. He said the samples in vials were mislabeled, leading to an incorrect autopsy.
The 11-month-old baby and her mother, Rosa Elena Carranza-Morales, 26, were found in a unit at the Pines of Ashton apartment complex in February.
Investigators said Noureddine Elamrani, 30, stabbed the baby's mother before setting the home on fire and shooting himself.
Butts said the correct samples are being retested. Those results will hopefully be ready by the end of the week.
