Mosquitoes will soon be flying back to pester people. State and local health officials are hoping to take an early swat at them.

Officials worried about mosquito-borne illnesses met Wednesday at Jordan Lake. Last summer, acrow at the lake tested positive for theWest Nile Virus.

State entomologist Barry Engber says he hopes to stop mosquitoes from multiplying by getting the word out about stagnant water and other breeding grounds for the bugs.

"At least informing homeowners is a basic thing that every community should be doing," he says.

People can tell mosquitoes to buzz off by staying indoors during the dusk and dawn hours. If you are outdoors, use repellent that contains deet. It is also important to empty any containers of water in your yard where mosquitoes may breed.
