A program that turns industrial waste into art has a new home in downtown Durham.

TheScrap Exchangeopened its doors Saturday at a new warehouse on Foster Street. Parents and kids sorted through barrels of castoffs they can use for art projects.

The program provides teachers and day care centers with leftover industrial supplies that would have gone to a landfill.

"We're thrilled. It's bigger, it's beautiful and we can be more creative here," says Pat Hoffman of the Scrap Exchange. "We have more room to bring kids in to do workshops."

The store is starting a major fund-raising effort to help pay for their new home.
