Plane Goes Down in Apex

A small private plane crashed about 8:30 a.m. Sunday near Fern Valley Court and Highway 64 in Apex.

Three people were on board. Frances and Lawrence Weathers of Bowman, S.C. were taken to Wake Medical Center. Sgt. J.O. Blackwell of the Wake County Sheriff's office said their injuries appeared to be non-life threatening.

Their son, Hugh, was the pilot. He was uninjured.

Investigators said the single-engine Beechcraft clipped a tree on takeoff from a private airstrip.

The Weathers had been headed to Orangeburg, S.C.

The FAA is investigating the accident.
