Days After Shooting, Local Schools Face Safety Threats

A 16-year-old student at Northern Vance High School has been arrested, accused of bringing a weapon to school Thursday.

The Vance County School Superintendent says the sawed-off shotgun was not loaded and was found in a backpack. The superintendent also tells WRAL the school system is initiating long-term suspension procedures.

In Greensboro, a bomb scare forced students from a middle school just after 9:00 a.m. Thursday morning.

Officials say a student was in a bathroom and overheard two other students talking about planting explosives at the school.

About 1,000 students left their classrooms and headed to the safety of the school's football field.

A bomb squad searched the school, but turned up nothing. Authorities believe the incident was prompted by the tragedy in Colorado.

Police do not know the identity of the two students who made the threats.
