Rain Helps Avert More Fires

Firefighters in Durham County were glad to see Sunday's heavy rains. They had been keeping busy battling blaze after blaze.
The latest fire broke out Saturday along a wooded area of Guess Road.
The fire burned through almost 10 acres.
Firefighters used bulldozers to build a fireline that stopped the flames just a few hundred feet from a nearby house.
They say carelessness may have sparked this blaze.
One report had it that some people smoking cigarettes had led to the fire.
Firefighters say a burning cigarette combined with extremely dry brush could be a disaster waiting to happen.
Given Sunday morning's thunderstorms and heavy rains over much of the state, fires are much more unlikely to break out.
