Closing Arguments Begin Wednesday In Mays Trials

The defense has rested in the Kawame Mays murder trial. In Wednesday afternoon's closing arguments the state would try to show that Mays was a calculated killer who gunned down Michael Walker and Raleigh Police Detective Paul Hale.

The defense rested Wednesday morning, the 8th day of the trial. The defense presented a total of 13 witnesses, including the defendant. The final defense witnesses pointed out inconsistencies in statements made by two prosecution witnesses who were there when Mays shot Hale.

The defense contends that Mays didn't know Hale was a police officer until after the shooting.

Another person who testified Wednesday was an inmate who has been in prison with Mays. He said Mays told him that he knew Hale was an officer, and that Mays had also intended to shoot Hale's partner, but his gun jammed.

The defense says that witness is trying to get out of jail and make a deal with the prosecution.
