Mother of Seven Killed in Random Shooting; Suspect Turns Himself in to Raleigh Police

The man who police say pulled the trigger, killing a mother of seven children Thursday night, has turned himself in to Raleigh police.

The victim, 29-year-old Carolyn Anne Boone, of Raleigh, was killed by a stray bullet while walking down a Raleigh street. She was carrying one of her 8-week-old twins in her arms.

Sgt. J.M. Lynch says the suspect, 21-year-old Rodney Lamont Wiggins of Raleigh, met with police Friday afternoon.

Family members are caring for the victim's the children.

Police say Boone was standing in a parking lot at the Raleigh Gardens apartment complex on St. Giles St. when gunfire erupted about 8:45 p.m. The gunman was allegedly shooting at the driver of a Ford Bronco, apparently in a drug dispute, when he killed Boone, police said.

Boone was hit and killed instantly. The baby in her arms was not hurt.

Witnesses told police they recognized the man with the gun as Wiggins and said he ran away after the shooting. He later walked into the downtown police station and surrendered. Wiggins has been charged with murder.
