Should Mercury Be Allowed In Classrooms?

School officials said a student found a small amount of mercury in a boy's bathroom at South Granville High School on Wednesday afternoon.

Teachers placed the mercury in a bottle and turned it over to emergency management officials.

Officials said air quality tests conducted Wednesday night revealed "no evidence of additional mercury at the school." School will operate on a regular schedule on Thursday.

South Granville was closed for three days last month after two students stole mercury from an unlocked cabinet and health officials conducted air quality tests. Fourteen classrooms had mercury vapor levels higher than the recommended level by the Environmental Protection Agency.

On Tuesday, officials announced that the makeup days are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 12; Saturday, Nov. 19; and Thursday, Dec. 22.
