N.C. Governor Mike Easley signed a bill Wednesday to crack down on a crime that affects about 300,000 people in North Carolina each year.
The bill,
the Identity Theft Protection Act
, prohibits businesses from using social security numbers for identification.
Companies also must destroy records containing customers' personal information. Plus, consumers can put a security freeze on their credit reports to prevent ID theft.
