Roanoke Rapids Leaders To Consider Increased Fine On Roaming Animals

City leaders are trying to protect neighbors from dangerous pets after a Rocky Mount woman was attacked last week while working in her garden.

Police say two pit bulls attacked Gloria Edwards at her home last Tuesday.

In response, the Roanoke Rapids City Council wants to fine pet owners $250 dollars -- instead of $30 -- for allowing vicious animals to roam neighborhoods. The council also wants to study a tougher vicious dog ordinance.

Residents in Edwards' neighborhood said the attack was the first in the area, but that they were concerned for the safety of small children who play outside.
