Authorities have arrested a man who they believe is responsible for a slaying in Wake County.

Jamie Antwon Mitchell, 28, was arrested Thursday in upstate New York. Authorities said he was wanted for the shooting death of Demetric Farrar Horton in Apex on Jan. 21.

Investigators received information that Mitchell may have fled to Gloversville, New York. After conducting surveillance, U.S. Marshals went to a residence there and took Mitchell into custody without incident.

Authorities also arrested Brooklyn Nelson, 20, of Holly Springs, and charged her with accessory after the fact. Authorities believe Nelson drove Mitchell to New York.

Another man, Irving Cooper, was arrested and charged with accessory after the fact on Jan. 21.

Mitchell had been arrested in connection with a the slayings of two migrant workers in Morrisville in 1997. He later accepted a plea deal and was convicted of armed robbery. He received a sentence of probation and served no additional jail time.

While awaiting trial, Mitchell was one of the first two students to graduate from the John H. Baker Charter High School at the Wake County Jail. He also received the Presidential Education Award. The school's charter was revoked earlier in January.
