New N.C. License Law Could Cost State Millions Of Dollars To Implement

A new federal law now has North Carolina working to figure out how to pay for it.

The Real ID Act tightens access to driver's licenses by requiring applicants to prove U.S. citizenship or legal residency.

North Carolina is one of only 10 states where such proof is not required. It must do so, however, beginning in 2008.

Estimates on how much the new rule will cost the state range from $2 million to more than $200 million.
