Fatal shooting underscores crime concerns in Fayetteville

Two men were shot Tuesday afternoon between two businesses on Ramsey Street, police said.

One of the victims died from injuries sustained in the shooting.

Around 3:30 p.m., Shukri Al Gahim was inside his tobacco store, near the intersection with Rosehill Road, when he heard "a lot of gunshots." Then, he said, one of the victims came into his store looking for help.

"He was shot two times. He came in and ran behind the counter," Al Gahim said.

The other victim tried to flee in his car, but crashed a short time later.

A few miles away, also on Ramsey Street, nearly 200 people gathered Tuesday evening for the police department's monthly community crime meeting, one day after investigators said they were looking into a possible connection between a July 13 rape and four other sexual assaults in the area since 2006.

Mary Angelicchio said she wants to know what police are doing to ease concerns about safety in the neighborhood.

"After a certain time of night, it just belongs to somebody else," she said. "It doesn't belong to us."

Interim Chief Katherine Bryant said one way to take the neighborhood back is to be alert and report anything suspicious. She said investigators can't solve crimes without help from the public.
