A Johnston County mother had the scare of her life when the SUV she was driving Tuesday flipped while her children were in the back seat.

It happened Tuesday on a wet bridge on Old Dam Road between Kenly and Selma.

Ana Contreras Patino says she hydroplaned, lost control of her car, flipped over a guardrail and ended up just a few feet from going into the Little River.

Her 5-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son were buckled into the back seat. The boy suffered some cuts but they were not serious. The girl barely had a scratch.

Patino's mother, however, did break her ankle, and Patino needed seven stitches for a cut.

Patino says she believes an angel was watching over them.

"I'm more surprised than anybody at how we were able to survive," she said.
