Wake Forest police detective Bonnie Heart will not be returning to work.

The human resources department said this is effective as of Monday.

Heart was on unpaid leave to deal with the stress of the high-profile federal case against her boyfriend, David Passaro.

Passaro is charged with beating an Afghan prisoner while he was working for the CIA in Afghanistan. He is on house arrest awaiting trial.

Passaro told a federal judge Tuesday that he is not guilty of beating the prisoner.

Defense attorneys still need security clearance to look at classified documents that might pertain to the case. A meeting is set for next week to make that happen. The trial cannot move forward until it does.
