Hit-And-Run Driver Committed To Dix for 180 Days

The man accused of going on a three-county hit-and-run rampage last month has been found unfit to stand trial.

Abdullah El-Amin Shareef waived his right to a commitment hearing Thursday and submitted himself to a 180-day involuntary commitment at Dorothea Dix.

At the end of the 180 days, a new hearing will be held to address whether Shareef is competent to stand trial. No exact date has been set.

Police believe stole a van and targeted people to mow down. Lonell Bass died after being hit. Gary Weller, a former coach at Pine Forest High School also was hit. He remains in fair condition.
