Prominent N.C. African-American Surgeon Dies At 86

Funeral services are Friday for a man who blazed his own trail in North Carolina medical history.

Dr. Charles DeWitt Watts, the state's first African-American surgeon, died this week at the age of 86.

Watts founded Lincoln Community Health Center in Durham and paved the way for other African-American physicians in the Triangle.

Watts spent his life working to provide medical services to the poor and underserved.
