One killed and two injured at Durham apartment shooting

One person was killed and two others were injured Wednesday night in a shooting at the Hearthside Apartments in Durham, police said.

The shooting happened around 7 p.m. near the intersection of Hearthside and Bacon streets. All three shooting victims were taken to Duke University Hospital, where Jesus Contreras, 37, later died. The other two people suffered non-life threatening injuries and are in stable condition, police said.

According to the Durham Police Department, no one has been arrested. Investigators do not believe that the shooting was random but have not identified any motives.

Neighbors told WRAL News that the suspected shooter was across the street at a different building in the apartment community before the shooting. At some point, he crossed the street and started firing near a large white truck that was parked in a nearby unit's driveway.

"I heard about 30 shots, more than 30 shots," said Radisha Umstead. "That's when I ran in the house."

Another neighbor, who did not want to be identified, said she saw the shooter put his hand in his pocket and she thought he was going to scare a man standing near the truck. Then, she said, she heard about 20 gunshots.

Investigators were still at the scene of the shooting late Wednesday interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence, including at least two weapons left at the scene. They also searched at least two apartments and a vehicle.

There was no word on possible motive or suspects. Anyone with information about the shooting should call investigators at 919-560-4440 (Ext. 29322) or Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200.
