12-Year-Old Boy in Serious Condition After Mail Truck Accident

A 12-year-old boy is in serious condition after a mail truck backed into him and left him pinned beneath it for at least 20 minutes Friday afternoon.

Josh Cobbler was riding his yellow BMX bicycle in Forsyth County about 3:30 p.m. when he was hit, said Capt. James Marshall of the Triangle Volunteer Fire Department.

The driver of the mail truck, Benjamin Scott of Kernersville, told investigators he backed up his truck to put mail in a box he had missed, Marshall said.

Trooper Rodney Robles of the N.C. Highway Patrol said that Josh had stopped about 10 feet behind the mail truck. He was waiting for traffic on the road to clear so that he could pass the truck when the truck hit him, Robles said.

Firefighters used hydraulic jacks to lift the truck off the boy and his bike. The rescue took 20 to 25 minutes, Marshall said.

Josh may have broken his arm or his shoulder, and he was bleeding from several cuts to his head, Marshall said. He was in serious condition Saturday at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

Charges against Scott are pending, Robles said.
