A North Carolina man who briefly escaped from custody of Ohio troopers was recaptured and taken to jail after he jumped from a moving Ohio State Highway Patrol cruiser onto a highway.

Troopers stopped Valentin Baniakina of Cary on U.S. 33 in Logan County for driving left of center. A records check revealed he was driving under suspension.

He was being transported to the Logan County jail to post bond when he escaped. Troopers say he opened the door and jumped from the front passenger's seat onto the highway and then fled on foot.

The cruiser was traveling about 55 miles per hour when the man jumped. It isn't known why he was in the front seat.

It took troopers and sheriff deputies over an hour to find Baniakina. He had only minor injuries and was treated at a hospital in Bellefontaine and released.

He's charged with driving under suspension and a left of center violation. Additional charges may be filed though the Logan County Prosecutor's Office.
