Durham County Deputy Killed in Wreck May Have Swerved To Avoid Deer

Investigators said speed may not have been a factor in that wreck that killed an off-duty Durham County sheriff's deputy Sunday.

The state Highway Patrol said Danny Maynard, 57, was driving his pickup truck south on Teknika Parkway in the northern part of Durham County around midnight.

Troopers said Maynard ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected and ran off the left side hitting a tree. Investigators first though Maynard was traveling at a high rate of speed, but are now looking into the possibilty that he may have swerved to avoid a deer.
