Durham police investigators believe a medical condition may have caused a 45-year-old man to lose control of his pickup truck and crash in a parking lot at Durham Regional Hospital Monday afternoon.

The driver, identified as Rodney Gantt, of Timberlake, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident happened shortly before 4:30 p.m. when police said Gantt drove a 1997 Chevrolet pickup truck into the emergency room parking lot off Crutchfield Street and struck a light pole. The pickup truck jumped a curb, hit a tree and crashed into a parked, unoccupied pickup truck.

A 4-wheeler that was on the bed of Gantt's pickup truck flipped out and hit the parked pickup truck.

Gantt's pickup truck sustained approximately $4,500 damage, and the parked truck sustained approximately $1,500 damage.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
