Authorities have determined a body found in an Edgecombe County creek is a missing 21-year-old woman from Rocky Mount.

On Tuesday, the medical examiner identified the body as Denise Williams, who had missing for a week.

A fisherman discovered her body Monday floating in Cokey's Creek in about five feet of water. Detectives say it appears Williams had been in the water for a while.

News of Wiliams' death is a shock to the community.

"We had good fun. I knew her when she was a child," said Calvin Norwood, Williams' friend. "I hung out with her, her brothers and her sisters and we just enjoyed ourselves.

Williams was last seen Wednesday when she was dropping off her friend at Nandinia Court.

Authorities are still trying to figure out how Williams died and whether foul play was involved.

Williams leaves behind a daughter and an infant son.
